IKO Ridge Vent Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We stock and install IKO-compatible ridge vent systems across Austin, with most full ridge vent replacements running $650 to $1,400 depending on roof length, pitch, and whether the old vent needs to come off before the new one goes on. Most Austin homeowners call us after noticing shingle granules collecting in gutters near the ridge, or after a summer attic heat spike makes the upstairs feel like a kiln. We carry the IKO profile on our trucks and can typically complete the swap in a single visit once we’ve measured the existing run. If your ridge vent is cracked, curling, or pulling away from the shingles, the fix is almost always a full replacement rather than a patch, and we’ll show you exactly why before we start.

Which IKO Models This Applies To
IKO ridge vents come in a few distinct profiles, and matching the new vent to your existing shingle line matters more than most homeowners realize. The two big ones are the IKO Multi-Thor and the IKO Ultra HP ridge vent, both designed to sit along the roof peak and vent hot air out while keeping wind-driven rain from getting sucked in. The Multi-Thor is the more common residential profile in Austin, with a low-slung 11.5-inch width and a mesh-wrapped baffle that sits under the shingle cap. The Ultra HP is wider at 14.5 inches and rated for higher airflow, which matters on large open attic spans like the ones you see in mid-century ranch homes around North Loop and Crestview.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: the cap shingles on top of the vent are not part of the vent itself. They come from the same bundle as your field shingles. So when we replace a ridge vent, we also need shingles cut for the cap, and the color has to match what’s already up there. We carry cap stock for IKO’s Cambridge, Dynasty, and Nordic lines in the colors we see most around Austin, including Weatherwood, Harvard Slate, and Dual Black. If your shingles are an IKO color we don’t have on the truck, we’ll pull a bundle from our supplier before the install date. Mercer Roofing Co Austin is an independent service provider, not affiliated with IKO, but our relationship with local IKO distributors means we can get the exact profile in one to two business days when it’s not already in our inventory.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: there are generic ridge vents that fit IKO roof lines and cost $40 to $60 less per section. We have installed them by request. But IKO’s baffle design is shaped to match IKO’s cap shingle profile, and using a generic vent can leave small gaps where the cap doesn’t fully bridge the vent edges. In a place where summer thunderstorms dump an inch of rain in thirty minutes, we recommend staying with IKO-branded vent when your shingles are IKO. It’s the one part of the roof where the manufacturer’s design tolerances actually account for how their shingles sit.

Signs Your IKO Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
Ridge vents fail quietly, usually starting with one small crack in the plastic that won’t show itself until the attic starts behaving badly. Here are the symptoms we see most on Austin roofs:
- Attic heat spikes in summer. When a ridge vent cracks or the baffle clogs with blown-in insulation, airflow stalls and attic temps climb past 140 degrees in a Texas July. Your upstairs AC runs longer, and your roof shingles bake from below as well as above.
- Shingle granules in the gutters near the ridge. High heat at the ridge degrades cap shingles faster than any other part of the roof. If you’re seeing granules pile up in downspouts under the gable ends, that’s likely cap shingle wear tied to a vent that isn’t shedding heat properly.
- Damp insulation or water staining on the attic floor. Wind-driven rain slides through cracked vent plastic or slipped shingles. It usually shows up as a small damp patch under the peak, not a big wet spot on the ceiling.
- Visible cracks, warping, or sunken sections along the peak. From the ground with a ladder at a safe angle, you can often spot a vent that has warped out of line with the shingles. This is UV and heat fatigue, and it’s normal after 12 to 15 years in the Austin sun.
- Birds or pests entering the attic through the ridge. When the vent baffle degrades or a section lifts, the ridge becomes a door for starlings and squirrels. You’ll usually hear them before you see any damage.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, a full IKO ridge vent replacement typically runs between $650 and $1,400 installed, and most of that range comes down to how long your peak is and whether we can reuse the cap shingles or need to cut new ones. A single-story ranch with a 40-foot ridge is naturally on the lower end. A two-story home with 80 feet of ridge, steep pitch, and damaged cap shingles pushes toward the top. If the decking under the old vent is rotted from a long-term leak, add $80 to $110 per sheet for replacement plywood or OSB.

Every price we give in Austin is written down before we start, and it includes removal of the old vent, inspection of the decking and cap shingles, new IKO vent installation, new cap shingles when needed, and a clean haul-away. You won’t see a change order after the fact. Work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if something about the install isn’t right within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing, every time.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle path here. If you own a sturdy ladder and can see your ridge from the eave, you can check for visible cracks, warping, or lifted cap shingles. That’s a fifteen-minute inspection that tells you if it’s time to call. What we don’t recommend is setting foot on the roof itself. Ridge work means standing at the highest point of your roof, often on a 6/12 or steeper pitch, while pulling old vent sections and nailing new ones with cap shingles in hand. There are real fall risks on Austin roofs with morning dew or leftover pollen making the shingle surface slick, and the last place we want a homeowner balancing is the peak of a roof over a concrete patio. If you’ve spotted a problem from the ladder, call us at (361) 202-8874 and we’ll take it from there.
FAQs
You can expect 12 to 18 years from an IKO ridge vent in the Austin climate, with the UV exposure and heat cycles doing most of the aging. Once the plastic turns brittle and shows hairline cracks, replacement is the only real fix.
Patch repairs on cracked ridge vents routinely fail within a year because the surrounding plastic has usually reached the same stage of fatigue. We don’t offer patching as a paid service because it gives you a false sense of security; a full section replacement is close to the same labor and holds up for the life of the roof.
Most IKO ridge vent replacements in Austin take one day from setup to cleanup. On longer ridges or when the cap shingles all need cutting, we sometimes spill into a second morning for trim work and a final inspection.
Yes. Our crews carry IKO Multi-Thor and Ultra HP vent sections on the truck, along with cap shingle stock for the most common IKO colors in Austin. If your color or profile isn’t on hand, we can typically have it on-site within two business days.
If your IKO ridge vent is showing its age, get the measured, written price before you decide anything. Call (361) 202-8874 and we’ll send a technician who arrives with a name and face you already know, a photo ID badge at the door, and a written quote before any work begins. Your roof shouldn’t be something you worry about – that’s what we’re here for.
