CertainTeed Roofing in Austin, TX | Mercer Roofing Co Austin
We provide independent CertainTeed roofing service across Austin, TX: repairs, full replacements, flat-roof membrane work, and decking corrections on the city’s older homes. Most calls in this area come down to one thing we see constantly: CertainTeed shingles that have been beaten by Austin hail and sun on 1970s-era decks that were never built to handle either. If your Landmark shingles are losing granules on a west-facing slope or a Flintlastic flat section is alligatoring at the parapet, call us at (361) 202-8874. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts.

Why Austin Residents Choose Us for CertainTeed Service
Mercer Roofing Co Austin works on CertainTeed systems every week. Landmark architectural shingles, XT 25 three-tabs, Presidential Shake, Flintlastic SA membranes. We know their nail patterns, their sealant behavior in Texas heat, and where they fail on Austin’s specific housing stock. That matters because most roofing calls here are not “which brand do I pick” calls. They’re “why is my 2006 Landmark roof bald on one slope now” calls. We answer that with a diagnosis, not a sales pitch.
Grant Whitlock, our owner, learned roofing at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and has spent decades on both flat commercial decks and steep residential pitches. He’s been working Austin homes for years, including a good stretch in Zilker where summer hail has a way of humbling even well-built roofs. He’s also the kind of person who will tell you when a repair is enough and when it isn’t. We don’t pad estimates to cover work that isn’t needed.
We’re an independent CertainTeed service provider. Not manufacturer-affiliated, not authorized by the brand. That independence means we can recommend what actually works on an Austin roof, even when it means upgrading an underperforming CertainTeed accessory. More on that below. You can also find us across our broader Austin service area.

Common CertainTeed Roofing Problems We Solve in Austin
- Premature granule loss on Landmark shingles, especially west-facing slopes. Austin’s UV index is brutal, and afternoon sun lands hardest on the west side. We regularly see Landmark roofs from the 2000s with bald spots and exposed fiberglass mat on those slopes while the north side still looks new. Hail accelerates it. We match remaining shingles when color allows, or explain honestly when it’s time for full replacement.
- Flintlastic lap lifting and alligatoring at parapet walls. Mid-century modern and ranch homes in Crestview and Allandale often have flat or low-slope sections, and the Flintlastic SA membranes on them heat-cycle hard. Repeated expansion and contraction lifts laps at parapets and penetrations. Water finds the gap. A patch done right can buy years, but only if the substrate is dry and the lap is cleaned correctly first.
- XT 25 three-tab shingles cracking and losing tabs on poorly ventilated 1970s attics. Those attics cook. 140°F is normal in July. The shingles bake from above and below, the tabs get brittle, and wind or hail snaps them off. This is more than a shingle problem; it’s a ventilation problem that has to be fixed or the next roof fails the same way.
- Presidential Shake valleys leaking on remodel additions. Presidential Shake is thick and beautiful, but its multi-layer profile traps moisture at eaves and valleys if the original install skipped proper underlayment. We find deck rot during tear-offs on additions that were permitted and passed. The shingle was fine. What was underneath wasn’t.
- Spaced board sheathing that can’t hold modern shingles. Allandale and Crestview ranches from the 1950s often have 1×6 boards with gaps instead of plywood decking. Nail a CertainTeed shingle onto that and half the nails hit air. It’s a blow-off waiting to happen and it voids any manufacturer warranty. Austin code now requires overlay before re-roofing these homes.
CertainTeed Service in Austin: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Roof
Here’s something most roofing pages won’t tell you. Austin’s code now requires new plywood or OSB overlay when re-roofing older homes with spaced board sheathing. That one rule changes everything about CertainTeed Landmark installs in Allandale and Crestview. You cannot just strip old shingles and nail new ones onto 1×6 boards with half-inch gaps. Nails miss, shingles blow off in the first spring storm, and CertainTeed will not honor a warranty claim on a deck that was never code-compliant to begin with. So before we touch a shingle on a 1950s ranch, we inspect what’s underneath. If it’s spaced boards, we quote the overlay first. It adds cost, sure. It also means the roof stays on the house. We just finished an Allandale job exactly like this: a 2006 Landmark roof with granule loss on the south slope and original 1×6 decking. Stripped it, screwed down 7/16 OSB, installed new Landmark in Weathered Wood with a ridge vent to drop attic temps from 140°F to near ambient. No more cupping, no more hail punctures in the valleys. That’s how CertainTeed work has to be done in Austin to last.
CertainTeed Models & Products We Service in Austin
We work on the full residential CertainTeed line that shows up on Austin homes. That includes Landmark architectural shingles, the older XT 25 three-tab system still on plenty of 1990s and early 2000s houses, Presidential Shake on higher-end builds, and Flintlastic SA self-adhered SBS modified bitumen on flat and low-slope sections. For parts, we source CertainTeed-branded replacement shingles and matching hip and ridge caps whenever the color and lot allow. But we don’t chase brand purity at the cost of a roof that actually performs. When a CertainTeed accessory underperforms in Austin heat, we’ll recommend an upgraded underlayment or ventilation component from a quality aftermarket supplier and tell you why. If you’re in Cedar Park or San Marcos, we also provide CertainTeed service in Cedar Park and CertainTeed service in San Marcos. What you’ll pay depends more on what’s underneath the shingles than on the shingle brand itself. A simple Landmark shingle replacement on a code-compliant deck runs lower than a tear-off that needs full OSB overlay. A Flintlastic patch at a parapet lap is a few hundred dollars when the substrate is sound; it climbs if the deck is wet or rotted. For Landmark roofs with hail damage on one slope, 10-20% of the slope, we can often repair with matching shingles. Beyond that, or when the tabs are brittle enough to snap in your hand, full replacement is the honest call. Roof decking replacement, vent boot repair, flat roof patch, shingle replacement. Every job gets a written line-item price before we start. No work happens without it. Call (361) 202-8874 for a free estimate and we’ll tell you exactly what your roof needs and what it costs.

FAQs – CertainTeed Roofing in Austin
Because those slopes take the full force of Austin’s afternoon UV on top of whatever hail the spring brings, and many of the homes they’re installed on have attic temperatures that bake the shingles from below. Granule loss on the west slope while the north slope still looks new is a pattern we see on Landmark roofs from the 2000s all over the city. Sometimes a slope repair works. Sometimes the whole roof has aged enough that you’re throwing money at a dying system. We’ll tell you which one you have. Call (361) 202-8874 for a straight answer.
Typically yes, if the leaks are at laps, parapets, or penetrations and the membrane hasn’t alligatored across the whole field. We clean the lap, prime it properly, and torch or cold-apply the patch the way the membrane was designed to bond. If the whole surface is cracked like a dry lakebed, patching just moves the leak around. We’ll inspect and show you photos either way. Estimates are free at (361) 202-8874.
We overlay it with new plywood or OSB, screwed to code, before a single shingle goes down. Austin code requires it. CertainTeed’s warranty requires a solid deck. The math is simple. Yes, it adds cost, but it’s the difference between a roof that survives the next hailstorm and one that loses shingles at the first good gust. We’ll show you the boards and the gaps before we quote the overlay, so you’re not taking our word for it.
In most Austin cases, yes. The XT 25 was a solid shingle for its time, but after 15-18 years on a poorly ventilated 1970s attic it’s usually brittle and cracking, and three-tabs simply don’t take hail the way a heavier architectural shingle does. Landmark costs more up front, but you’re buying impact resistance and a longer service life. We’ll quote both options and let the numbers speak. Call (361) 202-8874 and we’ll walk your roof together.
Because Presidential Shake’s thick multi-layer profile traps moisture at valleys and eaves when the original install skipped proper underlayment. We find it most often on remodel additions, where the original roof and the addition meet and someone took a shortcut on the transition. The fix is tearing out the valley, replacing the underlayment and any rotted decking, and reinstalling the shake properly. Eight years is too early for a valley to fail on its own. That points to the install, not the shingle.
