Tamko Shingle Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Tamko shingle repair in Austin typically runs $350 to $900 for a standard repair covering torn or missing shingles, broken sealant strips, and nail pops, and we stock Tamko-compatible materials on our trucks for same-week service in most cases. Most homeowners discover a problem the hard way: a shingle in the yard after a Hill Country windstorm, a water stain creeping across the ceiling after a spring gullywasher, or granules piling up at the downspout. What starts as one bad shingle rarely stays one bad shingle for long in this climate, where a 40-degree temperature swing between dawn and noon is just a Tuesday.

We’re an independent Austin roofing company, not affiliated with Tamko, but we work with their shingle lines regularly and know exactly what holds up here and what doesn’t. When a Tamko roof fails, it’s almost always one of three things: wind-lift on the sealant strip, hail bruising that cracks the mat, or installer error around flashing. We fix all three.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Austin homes carry Tamko’s Heritage, Elite Glass-Seal, and Titan XT lines most often, though we still see older Lamarite slate composite and MetalWorks panels around Tarrytown and Rosedale. The good news: most Tamko architectural shingles from the last 15 years can be repaired shingle-by-shingle without a full re-roof, as long as the underlying mat isn’t saturated and the sealant strip still bonds on the surrounding shingles.
The gotcha homeowners hit is color-matching. Tamko’s Heritage line cycles through regional color names like Weathered Wood, Driftwood, and Natural Timber, and a shingle bought from a big-box store in Austin may not match the same color name from a distributor five years ago, thanks to subtle granule-batch shifts. We keep a color board of current Tamko stock in the truck and can order exact-match bundles when needed, but if your roof is over 10 years old, expect a near-match rather than a perfect one, and we’ll show you both before we nail anything down.
On the OEM vs. aftermarket question: for Tamko specifically, we use OEM or distributor-sourced Tamko shingles whenever possible. Aftermarket generics exist, but they fight the visual match and the warranty chain. The savings are usually small enough that the right shingle is the better money.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing
Here’s what we actually find when we walk an Austin roof with Tamko shingle problems, and what each finding means:
- Granules in the gutters or at downspout elbows. Tamko shingles shed surface granules as the asphalt oxidizes, and in Austin’s UV-heavy summers that oxidation runs faster than coastal climates. A light dusting is normal; a pile that looks like coarse sand means the shingle’s protective layer is nearly gone.
- Shingles that lift at the corners during a breeze. This is the sealant strip failing, and it’s the most common wind-damage point on Tamko roofs in Travis County. A shingle that seals down once but won’t re-seal after a blow-through needs mechanical fastening or replacement before the next front.
- Water staining on the ceiling or around vent boots. Rarely the shingle itself. More often it’s the flashing at a pipe boot, valley, or chimney that’s failed, and the shingle got blamed. We trace the leak before replacing anything.
- Nail pops or raised nail heads under shingle tabs. Austin’s freeze-thaw cycles and summer attic heat work nails loose over time. A nail pop under a Tamko tab is a leak waiting to happen, and the fix is fast if caught before the nail head rusts through.
- Hail bruises or circular cracks that dimple the shingle surface. Zilker, Barton Hills, and the neighborhoods along the greenbelt see enough hail to leave soft bruising. It doesn’t always leak immediately, but a bruised Tamko mat has lost its impact rating and will fail sooner than the rest of the roof.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard Tamko shingle repair in Austin, you’re looking at $350 to $900 installed. The lower end covers a few torn or missing shingles, re-sealing lifted tabs, and replacing failed nail heads. The upper end covers section repairs around flashing, valleys, or ridge caps where we’re pulling and replacing a larger area.
What drives the range: roof pitch and access (a 10/12 on a two-story Tarrytown home costs more than a 4/12 ranch in Crestview), how many shingles are involved, and whether we’re color-matching current stock or ordering exact-match bundles. Materials on a typical repair run $75 to $200; the rest is labor, haul-off, and the written guarantee.
Every repair includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the work isn’t right within a year, we come back and make it right. No trip charge for the second visit, no debate about who caused what. That’s the whole point of the promise.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do a visual check from the ground: binoculars on a clear morning will show lifted corners, missing tabs, and granule loss without putting you on a ladder. What we don’t recommend is a homeowner doing shingle replacement on an Austin roof in summer. Attic heat radiates through the decking, the shingles soften into a slick surface, and a 140-degree roof on an August afternoon is not where you want to learn about footing. More than one homeowner has turned a $400 repair into a hospital bill.
If you want to try the repair yourself, do it in the cool months, use a proper roofer’s harness, and follow Tamko’s nail-placement spec for the line you have. But if you’d rather not spend your Saturday on a ladder, call us at (361) 202-8874. We’ll bring the right shingle, the right color board, and a written price before anything gets nailed.
FAQs
Tamko architectural shingles are rated for 30 years, but in Austin’s UV and hail exposure, most homeowners plan on 18 to 22 years of reliable life before repair frequency makes a full re-roof the better math. The most durable Tamko lines, like Titan XT, push toward the high end of that range when installed with proper attic ventilation.
Most single-shingle or small-section failures are repairable without a full re-roof, as long as the surrounding shingles still seal and the decking underneath is dry and sound. If the shingles around the damaged area are brittle, cracked through the mat, or losing granules heavily, a wider replacement is usually the more honest fix, and we’ll show you why before quoting it.
A standard repair of a few shingles takes 60 to 90 minutes on site, once we’re up. Flashing-related repairs around chimneys or valleys can run 2 to 3 hours. If we need to order an exact-match bundle, add 3 to 5 business days for delivery.
We stock a working assortment of current Tamko colors and styles on our trucks, plus distributor access to the full Tamko line if the exact match isn’t on board. We also carry compatible materials for GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed roofs, so if you have a mixed roof or aren’t sure of the brand, we can identify and match it on site.
