Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Owens Corning ridge vent installation in Austin typically runs $650 to $1,100 for a standard single-family home, including the vent material, new ridge cap shingles, and labor. We stock Owens Corning VentSure and WeatherPRO ridge vent rolls on our trucks, so most installs happen in one visit. Homeowners usually discover the problem after a hail storm or a roof inspection, when they notice cracked plastic along the ridge line or, worse, a leak in the hallway ceiling below.

Ridge vents fail quietly. They sit at the highest point of your roof, baking under the Texas sun and taking direct hits from spring hail. When they crack, split, or lose their filter material, your attic stops breathing the way it should. Here’s what you need to know to fix it right, the first time.

Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To

The parts we install most often are the Owens Corning VentSure Rigid Roll Ridge Vent (4-foot sections) and the WeatherPRO Rolled Ridge Vent (20-foot rolls). Both are 12 inches wide and designed to sit along the ridge line under Owens Corning hip and ridge cap shingles. The WeatherPRO has a slightly higher net free area rating, around 18 square inches per linear foot, compared to VentSure’s typical 12 to 14, which matters when your attic runs hot in a July Austin afternoon.

One compatibility gotcha owners run into: not all Owens Corning ridge vents play nicely with every ridge cap shingle. If your roof has older Owens Corning Duration or Oakridge cap shingles, the VentSure profile typically works without modifications. But if you’re pairing the vent with a non-Owens Corning cap or a thicker architectural profile, we often need to adjust the nail line or trim the vent slightly. It’s a detail that matters. We’re an independent service provider, not an Owens Corning affiliate, so we’ll match what works rather than push one brand. We also stock GAF and CertainTeed compatible vent parts for mixed-brand roofs, which are pretty common in older Austin neighborhoods like Crestview or Allandale.

Signs Your Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Visible cracks or missing sections of plastic along the ridge. Austin’s heat cycles expand and contract the vent material, and after ten to fifteen years, the plastic gets brittle. Hail is the usual accelerant; we saw a lot of this after the spring storms beat up roofs in Zilker and Barton Hills.
  • Grit or asphalt granules collecting in the gutter below the ridge. That’s a sign the cap shingles over the vent are wearing faster than the rest of the roof, which happens when the vent’s nail line was set too tight and the shingles can’t lay flat.
  • Stale, hot air in the upstairs rooms even when the attic fan runs. A blocked or collapsed ridge vent chokes the upper attic airflow. We check the end caps and the filter material first; clogged filter mesh is the most common hidden culprit.
  • Water stains near the ceiling’s highest point, not along exterior walls. Ridge leaks read different from flashing leaks. When water runs along the ridge and finds a gap at the vent’s end cap, it drips down through the peak, not the eaves.
  • You hear roof decking creak or see shingle tabs lifting along the ridge line during wind events. That’s the canary in the coal mine. The vent’s edge is supposed to be nailed into solid decking; if the decking has rotted around the vent opening, you’ve got a bigger fix coming.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Austin, you’ll pay between $650 and $1,100 to replace an Owens Corning ridge vent on a typical 1,800 to 2,500 square foot home. A full ridge replacement on a steeper two-story with a long ridge line, like many homes in Northwest Hills, might push to $1,400. The spread comes from two things: how much vent material the ridge actually needs and whether the ridge cap shingles are salvageable.

Every job includes removing the old vent and cap shingles, inspecting the ridge decking for rot, installing the new Owens Corning vent with new rust-resistant nails, sealing end caps properly, and nailing down new ridge cap shingles to match your roof. We give you a written line-item price before anything gets torn off. If the decking underneath is rotted, we’ll show you a photo and get your approval before we add any plywood work, no surprise invoice at the end. The labor is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year, we come back and make it right. Free.

DIY or Call Us?

Walking a ridge line is dangerous work, full stop. The ridge is the highest, steepest part of your roof, and one wrong step on granule-covered shingles is a life-changing fall. We don’t recommend DIY ridge vent replacement for this reason alone. Grant Whitlock grew up learning roofs from the commercial flat decks of Los Angeles to the steep pitches here in Austin, and even with decades of that work behind us, we still rope up and use proper fall protection on every ridge job. It’s not worth the risk from a hardware store ladder.

What you can safely do from the ground: look for missing or tilted cap shingles along the ridge line, or use binoculars to spot cracked plastic edges. If you see anything suspicious, call us at (361) 202-8874. We’ll come out, take a look, and give you a written price before any work starts. Your roof shouldn’t be something you worry about, that’s what we’re here for.
