CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vents throughout Austin, and a full ridge vent installation typically runs $575 to $1,150 depending on roof length, access, and whether decking repairs are needed. Most jobs are completed in a single visit, and we carry vent material on the truck so there’s no second trip for parts. Homeowners usually find us after a storm blows a section loose, or after they notice attic heat climbing in July and realize the vent isn’t pulling air the way it used to.

Ridge vents are the unsung workhorses of an Austin attic. They run along the peak of your roof and let hot air escape continuously, which is what keeps your attic from turning into a kiln during a Texas summer. When one fails, it’s rarely dramatic. You’ll notice it as a hotter upstairs, a mustier attic smell, or shingle granules collecting in your gutters near the peak. The part itself is simple, but the installation is where things go wrong if someone gets sloppy with the underlayment or doesn’t tie into the existing vent properly.

Key takeaways:

  • Installed CertainTeed ridge vent pricing in Austin: $575 – $1,150 for a typical home
  • We stock CertainTeed-compatible vent material on our trucks, plus GAF and Owens Corning equivalents for mixed-brand roofs
  • Every install includes a written price before work starts and the 365-Day Done Right Promise

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed makes a few ridge vent lines, and they’re not all interchangeable. The two you’ll see most on Austin roofs are the CertainTeed Ridge Vent (their standard external baffle design) and the CertainTeed Shadow Ridge, which is a low-profile vent that sits closer to the shingle line. There’s also the Cert-A-Ridge line, which includes a filter to keep wind-driven rain and embers out. Each has slightly different dimensions and nail-line spacing, and the shingle cap that goes over them varies too.

The gotcha we see often in Austin: a homeowner buys vent material online to “save money,” then discovers the nail line doesn’t match the width of their existing cut slot, or the vent is too rigid for a hip roof transition. CertainTeed’s 4-foot sections install end-to-end with their own end caps on most models, but the slot width your roofer cuts into the decking has to match, typically 2 to 2-1/4 inches on each side of the peak depending on the model. We identify the vent by measuring the exposed baffle width and checking the embossed model number before we ever order or commit to a replacement.

For most CertainTeed roofs, we install the OEM-equivalent vent. The aftermarket generics can save $40 or $50, but the plastic is thinner, the baffles warp in Texas attic heat, and the color match on the shingle-over cap is rarely right. On a roof that’s already 15 years old, the last thing you want is a vent that fails before the shingles do. We’ll install aftermarket if a homeowner insists, but we’ll tell you plainly that the CertainTeed-branded vent is the better call on a CertainTeed roof.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Attic temperature climbs with no obvious cause. A working ridge vent pulls heat out continuously. If your upstairs feels hotter than last summer and your A/C is the same age, the vent may be blocked, crushed, or separated from the decking. We’ve measured attic temps above 140°F in Zilker homes where the vent baffles had warped shut.
  • Shingle granules piling up in gutters near the peak. The cap shingles over a ridge vent take more UV and wind exposure than field shingles. When they start shedding granules faster than the rest of the roof, it usually means the vent underneath has shifted and is letting moisture sit against the shingle mat.
  • Water staining on ceiling near exterior walls under the peak. Ridge vents don’t create a big leak when they fail; they let water in slowly during wind-driven rain. The staining is subtle, often mistaken for humidity. If it’s under the peak line, check the vent first.
  • Wind noise or rattling from the roof peak during storms. A properly installed ridge vent is held by the cap shingles and sits quietly. If you hear flapping or rattling, a section has likely come loose from the nail line or an end cap has blown off. Get it addressed before the next storm.
  • Visible daylight or gaps when viewing the peak from inside the attic. Look along the underside of the ridge from inside. You should see the vent opening cleanly along the slot, not gaps at the ends or tears in the underlayment beside the slot. Any opening that isn’t covered by the vent is a bug and moisture entry point.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In the Austin market, a straightforward CertainTeed ridge vent replacement on a single-story ranch runs $575 to $850. A two-story home or a roof with steep pitches and limited ladder access pushes that to $850 to $1,150. Here’s what that includes:

  • Removal and disposal of the old vent material and any damaged cap shingles: $120 – $200
  • New CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent (4-foot sections, end caps, connectors): $180 – $320 depending on roof length
  • New cap shingles to match your existing roof color: $90 – $180
  • Labor and installation, including inspection of the decking along the peak: $185 – $450

If we find rotted decking when we pull the old vent, we’ll show you a photo and give you a written price for the repair sheet before we cut anything. That’s standard practice for us, not an upsell. The workmanship on every ridge vent install is covered by our written repair guarantee for 365 days. If the vent fails within a year of installation, the second visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

Walking a ridge line is the most dangerous place on any roof, and it’s where we see the most homeowner injuries. You’re working at height on a surface with no flat footing, often above a two-story drop. We don’t recommend DIY replacement of a ridge vent on anything taller than a single-story with a walkable pitch, and even then, only if you’re comfortable on a roof and have a proper harness.

What you can safely do: get into the attic on a sunny day and look along the peak for daylight gaps, torn underlayment, or obvious separation between the vent and the decking. Take photos. Check for water staining on the rafters near the peak. That inspection helps you understand what’s wrong before you call anyone, and it helps us give you a more accurate phone estimate. But the actual removal and reinstallation involves cutting back shingles, pulling nails at height, and re-nailing cap shingles straight and tight, which is where DIY projects go sideways. If you’d rather have a trained crew handle it, call (361) 202-8874.
